A long time ago, a man named Ira Sankey was on a boat sailing down a river called Delaware. Someone asked him to sing a song, so he sang a beautiful song called “Saviour Like a Shepherd Lead Us.” It’s a song about how Jesus takes care of us, just like a shepherd takes care of his sheep.
When Ira finished singing, a man came out from the shadows and said, “Were you ever a soldier in the Union Army?”
“Yes,” said Ira, “back in 1860.”
The man asked, “Do you remember standing guard one bright, moonlit night in 1862?”
“Yes, I do!” Ira answered.
“I was there too,” said the man, “but I was a soldier in the other army, the Confederate Army.”
The man continued, “I saw you standing there in the moonlight. I thought, ‘That man is in danger!’ I picked up my gun and aimed it at you. I was hiding in the dark, so you couldn’t see me, but the moonlight was shining on you.”
“But then,” the man said, “you looked up to the sky and started singing the same song you just sang. I thought, ‘I’ll let him finish his song, then I’ll shoot.’ But as you sang, ‘We belong to You, Jesus; please be our friend and guide us,’ something happened in my heart.”
“Those words reminded me of my mom. She loved God and used to sing that song to me when I was little. It brought back so many happy memories. When you finished singing, I couldn’t shoot. I thought, ‘The God who can save this man must be very powerful and kind.’ My hand just dropped, and I couldn’t hurt you.”
God kept Ira safe that night, just like He watches over all His children, guiding and protecting them like a loving shepherd.
