Song And The Meaning
Stanza 1
From pray’r that asks that I may be / Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
👉 Don’t let me pray selfishly, asking for an easy life or protection from struggles when You (Jesus) Yourself faced suffering.
From fearing when I should aspire,
👉 Save me from being afraid when I should be aiming higher in faith and courage.
From falt’ring when I should climb high’r,
👉 Keep me from hesitating or stumbling when I should be growing stronger and going further in my spiritual journey.
From silken self, O Captain, free / Thy soldier who would follow Thee.
👉 Free me from the desire for comfort and ease (“silken self”), because I am Your soldier and want to follow You with discipline and courage.
Stanza 2
From subtle love of softening things, / From easy choices, weakenings,
👉 Deliver me from secretly loving comfort, laziness, or the temptation to always choose the easy way instead of the hard but right way.
(Not thus are spirits fortified, / Not this way went the Crucified),
👉 Because that’s not how people grow strong in spirit, and that’s not the way Jesus (the Crucified) lived—He chose the harder, sacrificial path.
From all that dims Thy Calvary, / O Lamb of God, deliver me.
👉 Save me from anything that makes me forget or lose sight of Your sacrifice on the cross (Calvary).
Stanza 3
Give me the love that leads the way,
👉 Fill me with love that guides and directs my life.
The faith that nothing can dismay,
👉 Give me strong faith that nothing can shake or discourage.
The hope no disappointments tire,
👉 Give me hope that never gives up, even when life brings many disappointments.
The passion that will burn like fire,
👉 Give me a fiery zeal and passion for You that never dies down.
Let me not sink to be a clod:
👉 Don’t let me become spiritually dead, dull, or lifeless like a lump of earth.
Make me Thy fuel, O flame of God.
👉 Instead, let my whole life be fuel for Your fire, so I burn brightly for You, O God.
Song Lyrics:
1. From pray’r that asks that I may be
Sheltered from winds that beat on Thee,
From fearing when I should aspire,
From falt’ring when I should climb high’r,
From silken self, O Captain, free
Thy soldier who would follow Thee.
2. From subtle love of softening things,
From easy choices, weakenings,
(Not thus are spirits fortified,
Not this way went the Crucified),
From all that dims Thy Calvary,
O Lamb of God, deliver me.
3. Give me the love that leads the way,
The faith that nothing can dismay,
The hope no disappointments tire,
The passion that will burn like fire,
Let me not sink to be a clod:
Make me Thy fuel, O flame of God.
From all that dims Thy Calvary,
O Lamb of God, deliver me.
