The Priceless Inheritance

1 Peter 1:4 (NLT)

“We have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.”

When we think about inheritance, our minds often go to earthly possessions — health, wealth, comfort, or even heavenly mansions, royal robes, crowns, and golden streets.

But God’s inheritance for His children is far greater.
It is eternal life with Him and the joy of sharing in His divine glory.

A King and His Dog – An Illustration

Imagine a king who owns a dog.
The dog may think the best gifts its master could give are:

  • A big bone to chew on,

  • A tasty piece of meat,

  • Freedom to run outside,

  • comfortable place to sleep, or

  • Even royal robes and a crown.

Now suppose someone told the dog,
“Your master doesn’t just want to give you bones or comfort — he wants to transform you into a human being and adopt you as his own son.
He wants you to live with him in the palace and share all the privileges of his royal son.”

Would the dog understand or be excited about that?
Probably not. It can only think in terms of bones and meat — what it knows and desires at its level.

In the same way, we often fail to grasp the greatness of what God has prepared for us.
We may imagine heaven as a place of comfort and beauty, but the real inheritance is far beyond that.

Our True Inheritance

Our true inheritance is that God will make us completely like His Son, Jesus Christ.
We will live with Him forever, share His glory, and reflect His image perfectly.
That is our hope and our calling.

1 John 3:2–3

“We are already God’s children, but He has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears.
But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is.
And all who have this hope keep themselves pure, just as He is pure.”

A Prayer for Revelation

Let us not think like the “dog in the palace,” satisfied only with earthly blessings.
Instead, let’s ask God to open our spiritual eyes to see the greatness of our heavenly inheritance.

Ephesians 1:18–19

“I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know the hope of His calling,
the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints,
and the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.”

Summary Thought:

Our inheritance is not what God gives us —
it’s who He makes us: His own children,
sharing in the glory of His Son forever.
