THE ORIGIN OF ALL SIN IS PRIDE
- Zac Poonen
The Root of All Sin
Long ago, when God created the heavens and the earth, everything was perfect with no sin. Among the angels, there was one who was the head — perfect in beauty, wisdom, and position. But in Ezekiel 28:17 we read these five powerful words: “Your heart was lifted up.” These five words are the origin of all sin in the world today. Everything evil — chaos, confusion, war, murder, sexual exploitation, and every wrong done to others — traces back to this root of pride.
Pride Comes Through Comparison
Pride entered because this angel compared himself with others and saw himself as more beautiful, wiser, and higher in position. All pride works the same way. We compare ourselves with others — looks, cleverness, job, house, or spiritual gifts — and our hearts get lifted up. Even after accepting Christ, many problems remain in our lives because we have not dealt with this root. We may remove some external sins, but unless we hit the root, sin keeps cropping up in other forms.
God Opposes the Proud
1 Peter 5:5 declares, “God is opposed to the proud.” God is the enemy of every proud person and every form of pride — including spiritual pride (pride in being spiritual, knowing the Bible, or being respected). Many believers make little spiritual progress year after year because pride remains. God gives grace only to the humble. Just as water flows to the lowest place, the Holy Spirit flows to the humblest heart.
Dealing with the Root
Many Christians think they are holy because they have removed visible sins, but they never judge the hidden root of pride. Pride is like a bad smell others can detect, but we ourselves may not notice. Only those walking in humility can discern it. We must keep striking at this root daily. If we deal with pride, everything else will be taken care of, and we will experience God’s grace and true spiritual growth.
⏰ Key Takeaway
The origin of all sin is pride — “Your heart was lifted up” (Ezekiel 28:17). God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Deal radically with the root of pride through constant self-judgment and humility, and you will be protected from many sins and make real spiritual progress.
